A year of impact in depackaging and recycling

Rowan Food and Biomass Engineering Consultancy

If you are looking for a company who are down to earth and practical in their approach, who speak your language without the corporate jargon, then Rowan Food and Biomass is the company for you.

We are a family run company who pride ourselves in our integrity.  We work with the customer’s best interests as our top priority and with our years in the industry, from shop floor to production management.

We can ensure that you are totally satisfied that you have our best advice based on experience rather than theory.

Everywhere you look, businesses are jumping on the annual reflection trend popularised by Spotify Wrapped — a neatly packaged year of highlights, milestones, and metrics. Some are more welcome than others (a gentle note to the banking industry: we really don’t need to know our highest spend month!).

But for a company that specialises in depackaging — quite literally unwrapping waste — this presented something of a branding dilemma for us. But we’ve never been ones to shy away from pushing boundaries. So instead of wrapping things up, we’re doing the opposite.

Welcome to 2025, unpacked. Or, as we prefer to call it: depacked.

Growing the team, growing our reach

This year, increased support in our office has enabled us to spend even more time out in the recycling and waste management industry, connecting with customers, partners, and peers.

Early in 2025, we welcomed Janet to the team. If you’ve called the office, queried an invoice, or made a payment (or perhaps forgotten to!), chances are you’ve already spoken to her. She keeps everything running smoothly, and we’re delighted to have her on board.

Our commitment to collaboration and knowledge-sharing has also taken us further afield. We’ve been showcasing our Dominator Depackaging Machine across the globe, demonstrating how depackaging technology can support more sustainable and commercially viable waste management solutions. This year alone, that’s meant travelling to Mexico, Spain, and Italy, exchanging ideas and building relationships within the international recycling and waste sector.

And our globe-trotting doesn’t stop there. We’ve shipped depackaging machines and waste separator machines to both new and existing territories, including the United States, Hong Kong, Singapore, and beyond — helping organisations worldwide unlock value from food waste.

Innovation in depackaging and recycling

At the core of our business is a clear goal: to continuously improve waste management, particularly food waste, where redistribution is no longer an option. We want to empower businesses to manage waste in the most sustainable way possible — maximising onward recycling and green energy generation.

But sustainability alone isn’t enough. Solutions also need to be practical and commercially viable, which is the focus of our innovation and remains central to everything we do.

This year, we relaunched our compact LR depackaging machine, responding directly to the realities facing modern waste processing sites. With increased recycling targets and positive legislative changes, space is now at a premium. The LR model’s small footprint allows facilities to increase processing capacity without expanding their physical footprint — helping sites keep pace with rapid industry change.

We also launched our ER depackaging machine, designed specifically for food manufacturers and farmers who inevitably generate waste due to rejected produce or fluctuating demand. Rather than paying ongoing fees to commercial waste handlers, these businesses can now separate and process food waste on site. This not only reduces costs, but can also unlock potential revenue streams, by repurposing organic output for animal feed or anaerobic digestion.

We’re incredibly proud that this focus on innovation was recognised through shortlisting for both the Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management and the MRW National Recycling Awards 2025.

A stronger focus on thought leadership

This year also saw an increased focus on thought leadership. With just a little arm-twisting, we even persuaded our directors to step in front of the camera, sharing insights on depackaging, food waste recycling, and the future of sustainable waste management on TV.

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, we continued to design and manufacture depackaging and waste separation machines for some of our largest projects to date — supporting a growing range of applications and industries across the recycling and waste management landscape.

As we “depack” the year, one thing is clear: none of this would be possible without our customers and partners. We’d like to thank you for your continued trust and collaboration, and we look for

ward to growing even further together in 2026.
