In the world of waste management and recycling, trommel machines, depackaging (or separation) machines and shredders all play key roles.  But although there is some overlap in their uses, they also have distinct differences in their applications, benefits and how they operate.  So, what do you need?

Trommel machines

Trommel machines, also known as trommel screens, are used to separate materials based on size.  Think of a sieve – the smaller particles pass through the holes whilst larger items are retained, typically into a cylindrical drum to be later discharged at the end of the process.  They serve as separating technology and can be used in recycling to sort small debris from larger recyclables such as bottles and cans.  They’re also used in composting, to separate fine compost from larger, non-decomposed matter.

If all you need to separate is different sizes, a trommel machine is efficient, low maintenance and will do the job.  However, it won’t unpackage items and should perhaps be considered more of a ‘sorter’ than a ‘separator’ – classifying different materials that are mixed, but not joined.

 

Shredder machines

Rather than separating materials, shredders are designed to reduce the size of materials by cutting, tearing or grinding them into smaller pieces.  They come in different types including single-shaft, dual-shaft, and four-shaft designs – depending on the specific application.

Whilst our minds may instantly think of paper shredders, in an industrial setting they can be used on plastics, metals, wood, rubber and so on, for more manageable recycling.  They also play a role in reducing the volume of waste, making it easier to handle, transport, and process – with important knock-on benefits to the environment.

 

Depackaging machines

A depackager will separate packaging materials from the organic or recyclable content within them.  Again, different types of depackaging machines exist and some may use a combination of shredding or screening (i.e. trommel) within the process.  The end result is separated material AND broken down packaging which is naturally torn into smaller pieces during the process.

Typically, depackaging machines are used in food waste processing, separating edible content for animal feed or biogas production.  They also play a vital role in recycling operations and waste-to-energy plants, isolating organic materials that can be used for energy, from their packaging.

 

The Dominator – the best of all worlds.

The Dominator is a depackaging machine that uses centrifugal forces to remove packaging from the materials handled.  As a result, it is a more complete solution which aids both onward recycling of plastics, cans and so on as well as effective use of organic materials.

Whatever the technology, at the heart of all three approaches is a desire to reduce waste and boost resource recovery.  The impact of running such machinery from both a cost and environmental perspective should therefore be a key consideration.   A simpler solution may seem attractive on the surface but may lead to downstream costs or environmental impacts if the material needs to be further processed.
